Scrabble is one of the most classic board games of all time! But these five new rule twists can bring a whole new life to each round you play! If you’re the kind of player who knows every trick in the book for getting a high Scrabble score, then these ideas may not be for you (keep working toward the world record with standard play!). But if you’re looking for an easy way to switch things up while simply playing to have fun, then try the five ideas!
Bur first, if you don’t have Scrabble at home but want to play some word games, you can get several ideas to play with a single letter card deck that’s downloadable on our site! Check out the game ideas here, and download the letter card deck here.

1. Stacked Words. If any words on the board have words within them (such as “sea” within “seals”), then you can stack your tiles on top of them and count the points as if you had played the tiles directly onto the board.
--
2. Trade Tiles. Before each round, randomly draw one tile to be your “trade tile.” Write it on a paper for reference and then put the tile back in to be drawn. Then, anytime a player plays a word with that letter, the player can choose whether to trade any or all of his/her tiles with another player.
--
3. Anchor Letters. Before each round, randomly draw five tiles and toss them onto the board. Place them faceup on the squares closest to where they land. Those letters become “anchor letters” that must be played into by any other words placed in that area on the board.
--
4. Doubled Up. Before each round, select a number between 10 and 20. Anytime players earn that exact number of points on their turn, they get to double it. For example, a word worth 10 points would become worth 20 points.
--
5. Outside In. Rather than starting on the center square, play must begin in each of the four corners. Then, play continues until words built on chains from any two corners intersect, at which point all scores are tallied to determine the winner.
