S’mores nights are a favorite for my family. Grandma always finds the best marshmallow flavors (thanks, Mom!), so we decided to do an official s’mores taste test to see which marshmallow flavors are best and even try some fun combinations, including putting them on cookies and crackers. We even had some extra chocolate pudding from dinner, so we decided to see if it would work on s’mores! How was it? Find out below!
Smash Mallow Mint Chocolate Chip Marshmallows
Our family members have very mixed feelings on mint-flavored treats. But this delicious Smash Mallow Mint Chocolate Chip marshmallow was a perfect taste for everyone! (Nice work, Smash Mallow!) The mint flavor was present but not completely overwhelming. This marshmallow was a complete victory for everyone—eaten on a s’more or even by itself.
Smash Mallow Cookie Dough Marshmallows
Smash Mallow gained another huge victory with their Cookie Dough marshmallow. While it lost a tiny bit of the cookie-dough flavor when roasted (it was stronger straight from the bag), the flavor was definitely a nice bump up from plain marshmallows. We ended up using this as our go-to for fun treat combinations and loved the extra flavoring.
Yümmallo Strawberry-Filled Marshmallows
Perhaps I set my expectations too high imagining the taste of a chocolate-dipped strawberry when I added this strawberry-filled Yümmallo marshmallow to my s’more, but this flavor fell a little short. I honestly think there’s more strawberry flavor in the fruit-flavored marshmallow pack that has been around for years. These strawberry-filled marshmallows ended up seeming better as a light treat by themselves instead of as part of a s'more.
Yümmallo Cinnamon Twist Marshmallows
The Cinnamon Twist marshmallows from Yümmallo also fell a little short for us. They add a fun twist compared with regular marshmallows, but if you’re going to splurge for a fun flavor, we recommend going with a different option.
Stuffed Puffs Chocolate-on-Chocolate Marshmallows
As a chocolate lover, it’s no wonder the Stuffed Puffs Chocolate-on-Chocolate marshmallows were a personal favorite when eaten in a basic marshmallow-chocolate-graham s’more. But they were a little rich for several members of my family when combined with more Hershey's chocolate on the s’more. What’s great about them is they really can stand alone with a graham cracker if you’re worried about Hershey’s chocolate bars melting in a sunny car or just want a simpler, two-ingredient s’more (which is also great for toddlers when you don’t want chocolate melting all over their hands). If you’re a chocolate lover, these are a definite must-buy. And if you’re an ultra chocolate lover, they’re a must-buy with extra Hershey's bars, too. ;)
Sour Patch Kids Marshmallows
Sour? On a s’more? With chocolate? Yes, we were skeptical, too. And for good reason. The combo with the Sour Patch Kids marshmallows was definitely unique. All but one person opted not to go for a second s’more bite with this marshmallow, BUT these were a favorite treat eaten OFF of a s’more by themselves—at least for all but one family member who was definitely not a fan. So while this doesn’t make the top of our s’mores list, it does qualify for a nomination in the top of a treats chart. In fact, the whole bag was gone by the end of the night—some roasted over the fire pit and eaten warm (by themselves) and some eaten straight from the bag.
Chocolate Pudding S’mores with Mint-Chocolate Chip Marshmallows
My favorite s’mores creation came because we happened to have Jell-o chocolate pudding with dinner and I knew immediately it needed to be part of our taste test afterward! We actually did a twist on the chocolate pudding and added it to a carton of Cool Whip (add just a little milk mixed in beforehand to help with texture) instead of making it according to the directions. That pudding twist ended up being helpful when adding it to s’mores because it’s a little thicker than regular pudding (inspired by Disney’s “Grey Stuff” that’s delicious). ;)
So, how was it? Pure HEAVEN when combined with Smash Mallow’s mint-chocolate chip marshmallows. The hot-cold combination was a little shocking at first, but it’s actually a pretty fun pairing after the first-bite taste shock goes away. To be fair, not everyone loved it. But it was a definite fave for the rest of us. I think it’s worth giving it a try.
Fudge Brownie M&Ms S’mores
Have you tried the Fudge Brownie M&Ms yet? They’re my all-time fave tied with the limited-edition Strawberry Nut M&Ms that came out a year or two ago. So I thought I’d LOVE them on s’mores. I was wrong. The Fudge Brownie M&Ms s’more ruined the M&Ms and ruined the s’more. Ha, ha! Don’t try this one at home. ;)
Chocolate-Marshmallow Oreo S’mores
We also thought it would be fun to give an Oreo cookie a try instead of graham crackers, because we know that chocolate-chip cookies are always a fun replacement for graham crackers. How did the Chocolate-Marshmallow Oreo fare in comparison to chocolate chip cookies? Honestly, not as well. We had high hopes for these as well (Chocolate-Marshmallow Oreos seem destined for a s’mores treat), but it was only so-so. And since these Chocolate-Marshmallow Oreos are so delicious on their own, I’d recommend eating them by themselves when you want a s’mores replacement without the campfire!
Ritz Cracker S’mores
Finally, I’ve heard Jamielyn Nye from I Heart Naptime (give her a follow on Instagram—you won’t regret it) talk about using Ritz crackers instead of graham crackers with s’mores. So we decided to give it a try, and it’s a pretty fun combination! It wasn’t for everyone, but many enjoyed the sweet-salty combination. The favorite combo was with Smash Mallows Cookie Dough marshmallows. But if you’re trying the Stuffed Puffs Chocolate-on-Chocolate marshmallows, maybe stick with a graham cracker—it left a strange aftertaste for a couple of us when this combo was paired together (still not sure why, because we love a good salty-chocolate combo). But we loved experimenting with the Ritz!
And while they weren’t part of our s’mores test, I thought it was worth mentioning that if you haven’t tried roasting a Starburst over a campfire, give it a try! (Just be careful to let them cool down a little before pulling them off the roasting stick.) They are one of our very favorite campfire treats!
