I love a good game that’s not only fun but that also engages my brain as well; this game does that for all ages! For teens and adults, it’s a fun word game that also allows strategy to come into play—and it’s a great memory booster! For younger children, it’s a creative take for daily spelling practice (read to the end for a variation that allows you to use weekly spelling words)!
To play, simply lay out letter cards upside down in a large block pattern. We have PRINTABLE letter cards in 7 COLORS, and each set also has frequently used letter combinations like “ch,” “th,” and “ph.” Then take turns flipping over four cards each turn. If you can spell a 3- or 4-letter word with them, pick them up and keep them! If not, turn them back over and let the next player take a turn.
You can play where the person with the most cards wins. Or, with our Ultimate Letter Card Game Deck, letters that are less frequently used in words have more points. So for an extra fun game of strategy, count up these bonus points on your cards and add them to the number of cards themselves to encourage your family members to search for more advanced letters and words on their turns!
If you want to incorporate this game into a weekly spelling list, simply set up the game board with all the letters used in two—or more, depending on the number of players—of the spelling words for the week and then sprinkle in some additional letters as well. Don’t worry if you’ll have enough cards for words with repeat letters; our game deck has multiple cards for popular letters! Then, rather than looking for 3- or 4-letter words, each player is assigned a word to spell from the spelling list, and they flip over two cards each turn. If they pull out the next letter they need to spell their word in order, they get to keep it. The first person to find all their letters in the correct order wins!
And don't miss our additional word games you can play with our Ultimate Letter Card Game Deck (we add more game ideas with this letter deck often as well). Enjoy games like:
